MastHeads:

As I have decided that my magazine will feature music rather than fashion. I must create a masthead. As my photos have already been taken, this will work to my advantage as they could be used as inspiration.

Other aspects of inspiration are previous and successful music magazines. For example:

Kerrang:

This is the logo from a very successful music mag. As the title of the magazine is unusual, unique and original, it attracts readers. Furthermore, as it is an abnormal name, it is easier to rememeber which works to its advantage.

The name itself I think is pretty self explainatry for the genre of music. It is catchy, quick and quirky which fits the genres of music mixed into the magazine. As the writing is neither flowery or coloured to represent 'females', the rock style is clearly shown.

Colour Schemes:

Photos:

Here are my photos for the magazine. During this, I will need to decide which ones I will use. As for the ones I havent used, they will just be placed in planning:

Ryan Willis
Here is a photo of my male model. Like planned, both models were dressed in casual wear. This will give my audience the chance to relate to ordinary people. In this photo, the model has refused to show any facial expression. This photo could be within my double page for a negative story.

The next two photo's will be placed on te double page but as extra photos. I like these photos as they are plain and simple.

 -

As my magazine is based on Music mags, the next two photos seemed vital. By combining a guitar and microphone, this automatically has linked my models into a duet band.

When looking through all of the photos taken that day, this is my favorite. I have decided that this will be my cover photo for the front cover.

Overall the photos was a success. As there are fewer photos of my female model. the double page will be based on the male.

The use of the white background will make editing the photos much easier for things such as 'cutting out'.Also as both models have vibrant/bold hair colours, this will also be easier to cut out rather than a lighter shade.

31/01/12

Today I began taking photos for myproject. Both of my models were dressed casually to conclude in them looking like everyday individuals. Also as they were in their own choices of clothing with a few requests from me, this made them look unique and different. Many individual shots were took for the male model as he will be featured in the double page.  The photo's I took of him were on various different levels with the prop of a guitar.

The use of the guitar emphasized that these photo's were for a music magazine.  However the female model took more feminine photo's with a microphone. Using both musical props and group shots, I could form my two models into a duet band.
This was very successful :-).

However, to conclude in my photo shooting,I need:
  • Outside shots
  • Photos to be featured as advertisements
:-))

PhotoShoot.

Before I began to take photo's of my models (Sarah & Ryan), I decided to look at other magazines and the poses they used for their models. Here are some examples:

This magazine makes the female look superior. Since she is staring at the camera, this cathces the readers attention as it gives the illusion she is staring right at YOU.

This front cover shows that body guestures portray alot. For example as she has placed her arm across her stomach, this cleary shows she is pregnant.

Planning

TO conclude in my final piece being a success, I have began to plan different ideas which I could use and consider. Without doing so, this could conclude in my front cover, contents page and two page spread failing miserably.

Main Qualities I Need To Include:
- house style
- colour scheme
- MastHead
- Photo's to include
- Purpose

Involving all of these aspects and more, surely nothing can go wrong? I hope. Enjoy :-)

The Start.

For this project, I need to create a product in relation to magazines. This will conclude in my product containing:
  • A Front Cover
  • A Contents Page
  • A Double Page
To ensure my product holds the conventional things a magazine would have, I will need to research into various mags and learn the many key techniques. Enjoy :-)

Slumdog Millionaire

Media Ownership Essay

The Uk has been proven to be dominated extremely by Hollywood alone. This ongoing issue has concluded in American films receiving more popularity than British creations. Although this has concluded in American films making larger profits and sales increases, this has worked the opposite for the British films which have failed to gain as much popularity thus struggling with distributing and promotion.
However, although this was an occurring crisis, certain films were able to become as successful as certain American creations. An example of this is Slum dog Millionaire created by Danny Boyle. Although this film suffered the economical lack, the success the film concluded with was overwhelming. As Boyle used a Global audience, this concluded in his film attracting more than one culture/country. This is due to his eclectic use of cultures within the film. Originally, the film was based upon a young boy born within the Slums leading to a lack of education and welfare. His journey of better living is featured within the film whilst the British game; ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ is intertwined into the story. The collective use of cultures and religions allowed huge and varied audiences to become intrigued by the film. Without this, it is suggestive that the film would not have succeeded as it already has. Using Indian conventions, this allowed the film to hold realism and connect with the storyline thus gaining the larger audiences. Also as the director had already created successful films previously this worked to his advantage.
Tug launched targeted banners across the Google Content network to build awareness of the film on a cost per click model Google is the most used website so this got the film a lot of recognition. The film was shown in cinemas starting at a lower screening number then increasing engaging a platform audience after this the film was then released on DVD and Blue-Ray which meant more profit was gained from the movie.
Another main issue raised by Media Ownership in films is how it is easier to release a film if the company is vertically integrated production distribution and exhibition work a lot more effectively when the company is 'vertically integrated' as the three stages are seen as part of the same larger process, under the control of one company.
Within the media world, ownership has become a dominated factor due to Sony. The vast organisation is vertically integrated due to owning so many companies. By adopting numerous smaller companies into their family, this has enhanced Sony’s success. For example, by owning a collective speciality companies this allowed Sony to control most aspect of the media world.

Synergy was was used in the release of Spiderman as the film. An example of this was the merchandise distributed before and after the film. As the soundtrack was very popular within the time, this became a hit. Furthermore, Sony had already signed the soundtrack to them concluding with another increase economically for their company.
The advertisement used for the release of Spider men left the film extremely popular before the launch. Using viral marketing and creating a website, this benefited the film and Sony vastly. Overall this lead to Sony holding a vast hold upon the media world.

More on Sony:

How can sony be called a vertically integrated company?

The company Sony are in possession of numerous different companies within different stages of the musical industry. This gives the company a huge advantage as they own many rights towards artists etc. Also by owning aspects such as video gaming factors and other forms of convergence and synergy this gives the company the status of being vertically intergrated. By becoming vertically-integrated, Sony hoped to create "synergies" in its operations, or stated another way. Sony wanted to stimulate the sales of hardware by controlling the production and distribution of software.

How did the release of Spiderman exemplify synergy?

As the majority of the younger population are socially active on either social networking sites or other websites such as YouTube, by displaying ads and previews on these sites enhanced the variety of people they could advertise to. By branching out the areas in which advertised, this will increase the numbers interested by this new film thus Sony succeeding in constructing a profit.

How was viral marketing used to promote monsters?

By creating a website containing all information based on this film, this enhanced the chances of promotion. As a vast amount of the population use the internet to this present day, by creating this website, the marketing for this film increased vastly. Looking at the website, this site is covered with 'sneak previews' and trailers which will capture the best parts of the film such as clips of the climax. This then intrigues the veiwer and makes them want to view the film when released.  This increases the promotion by increasing advertisments.

More on Sony..

How significant have convergence, synergy ad vertical integration been in the development of Sony and its ability to produce, promote and distribute films? Make references to Spider Man and your own choice of recent release. You must consider DVD and Blu-ray as product too.

The Development made by Sony is to a thenominal extent. This is due to numerous different factors in which have assisted the ‘parent company’ in becoming as well known and successful as it is to the present day.  Without factors such as synergy, convergence and vertical integration the company would not have progressed. Within this type of organisation, advertisement skills and use of digital technology in promoting the product are key in succeeding in selling.
Although Sony distributes films, this doesn’t suggest that this organisation is tied to only this distribution. As the organisation has become a ‘parent company’ to others due to buying other companies and partnerships this gives them a vast range of distribution chances. This suggests and also proves that Sony is extremely vertically integrated. By buying out competition this concludes Sony creating itself superiority.
Sony also owns Sony Music Entertainment created by successive mergers from a variety of different companies. Examples of these companies are; Epic, RCA and Columbia Records. The company Sony Music Entertainment Inc. is a vast well known company which is owned subsidiary of the Sony Corporation of America.
This is an example of how large scale Sony itself actually is. By having such a vast amount of relationships with other companies, large and small this concludes in larger successes

The film Spiderman is a very basic example of how Sony uses these numerous different promotion skills to sell and promote their product. When the film first was advertised, there were a variety of promotion skills used – this enabled Sony to reach a range of different audiences by using advertisements such as posters and adverts etc. Convergence is used to promote the product in a way that attracts the desired chosen audience. This is succeeded using new technology.
Using Spiderman as the example, the synergy Sony created and manufactured for this film alone was positively huge.  The company used promotion skills to the extent of Spiderman advertisements were found in numerous public places and in stores.                                                                                                           As Sony is such a vast organisation, the ownership and partnership with other minor companies concludes in many other opportunities to advertise and promote. For example, as GAME is released under SONY play stations, this was a huge opportunity which generated Spiderman into the virtual world of video games. By using the characters voices from the film within this video game, this enhanced the realism of the game being extremely similar to the film.  The use of creating a virtual spider man gave Sony the chance to vary their target audience as the younger generation would have been hit with the adverts.
The promotion of Spiderman also leads to further ideas in promotion. Manufactured toys were distributed thus giving a child their own chance to embrace their Spider man adventures. As the deal was confirmed between Warner Shop, Toy Biz and Sony, this lead to further profit making.
As shown, spiderman was distributed in a way in which would benefit Sony massively. Without the use of Synergy and convergence, the successful scale of this film would have decreased to a miniscule success, perhaps even failure. The use of eclective advertising skills enabled Sony to conclude in a vast target audience which maximised profits.

Other films distributed by Sony have the similar conclusion in promotion. Another example would be the film, ‘Bounty Hunter’. The convergence used promoted the film and directed the audience’s desires in investing to view the film.  The website involves the viewer immediately by placing a game on the website. By doing so this gives the viewer a different outlook on the film.
However, this specific film does not contain any large scale digital effects to create abnormal effects as the storyline is based on someone average life. Although this will prevent the film in being able to advertise itself to appeal to certain audiences, the synergy behind this film alone balances this.
The manufactures of this film have used a variety of techniques to ensure success for this creation. By using a variety of styles of advertisements, this ensures that the target audience for this film will be reached whilst also appealing their film to others with the consistent adverts.
An example of this is making the films sound track available to others. By doing so, this advertises the piece in many different stores thus increasing the popularity before some have even viewed the film.
Without the industries extreme use of technology, the promotion of both of these creations may have not had the same impact on its audience as they have. As the advertisements promote the film from before it is screened up until the day itself, this creates an anxiety and enthusiasm towards the piece.

Sony

Sony is a vast organisation which can be known for being a parent company of the Sony group. The corporation is mainly focused on electronics.  The company developed and evolved from a smaller company which built electronic equipment for broadcasting and recording to another which built software for recording.  This removed the in between stage and the increase in wealth began.

When Spiderman was released, the synergy of the entire thing was huge. By associating Sony into the promotion this led to advertisements of other factors such as:
·         Artists
·         Movie itself
·         Revenues Sony
Without this vast amount of advertisement, the film could have perhaps not have been as successful. The extra promotion concluded in the film being advertised in many different ways promising a large population would see the advertisement and become immediately interested.

My Attempts:

My task was was to create the front cover and contents page of a school mag. I decided to create mine with a varied target audience. Although students would be my main audience with the ages varying from eleven to eighteen, there was the possibility staff could read this school based media piece.
To suit all ages, I took the classical Heworth grange colours of Yellow, blue and and black and based my colour scheme on this. By carrying on these dominant colours throughout my front cover and contents page, this  made the two pieces almost belong to each other instead of a HUGE contrast.

The main stories I advertised on my front cover were school based ofcourse but highlighted many different years. For example a double spread on a six form matter and others on factors such as:

- Teacher related stories
- Building contruction news
- etc

After annalysing many different mags, I chose to go with the stereotypical look with a blown up picture of a person. One of my models is shown:

As the mag was dedicated to school purposes, I used two photo's of pupils within the school. I also belnded a photo of a pupil in with the newest building work to show many different aspects which the mag would highlight.

My Pieces:

Enjoy :-)

Magazine

When looking at different genres and styles of magazines, it was clear the target arudience had a HUGE impact on nearly everything variable. If the target audience wasn't considered this would bascially lead to the magazine failing to sell as it wouldnt appeal to its chosen peers.
Colour schemes are vital within a magazine layout. Without a layout, this will lead to the magazine losing structure and looking a tad messy. The correct colour scheme can sometimes even attract the chosen audience. For example if the colour palet was more or less different shades of pink or pastel colours, this would automatically be stereotyped as a females mag.
The use of font & sizes is also an important factor. If the font is say bubble writing this would obviously be directed to a younger audience instead of the older generations.

Considering many different factors involving the media and design of a magazine, I then began to create my own front page and contents page.

Will post soon :-)

Welcome?

Hello and welcome to my blog :-).  This blog will basically be covered with practical and theory work associated with my alevel in Media Studies. I will be updating this blog regularly..or should be anyways.... so hopefully it will not become boring. If it does, my apoligies in advance!? :')
